Transy upends No. 24 Carthage

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Ethan Spurlin and reserve Michael Stone each scored 13 points Sunday, keying Transylvania to a 75-66 upset win over No. 24 Carthage in non-conference men's basketball action at the Beck Center.

Transy is now 9-2 on the season following its seventh win in a row. The Red Men, ranked No. 24 in the d3hoops.com poll, are 7-4. The Pioneers are off to their best start since the 2005-06 team won 11 of its first 13 games.

spurlin Head coach Brian Lane won his 159th career game, one behind Lee Rose for No. 3 on Transy's all-time win list. The two trail only Don Lane (509) and C.M. Newton (176). Brian Lane is 158-92 in nine plus seasons.

A well-played first half saw five lead changes before Transy wound up with a 40-32 edge at intermission. Neither team led by more than eight points.

Transy shot 48 percent from the field in the first half and got 11 points from Ashley Hatfield and seven apiece from Brandon Rash and Mike Satterwhite. The Red Men connected at a 42 percent clip and led by seven three minutes into the contest before the Pioneers mounted a comeback. Mitch Thompson had nine points to key the visitors early and Steve Djurickovic added seven points and six assists.

Transy led by as many as 15 points over the final half and never let Carthage get closer than seven points. The Pioneers led by 14, 74-60, with three minutes to play.

Stone's 13 points were a career high. He helped the Transy reserves outscore their counterparts, 28-13. Spurlin had six rebounds, giving the Pioneers a 34-27 advantage on the boards.

Barrett Meyer notched 12 points, including five of seven from the free throw line. Hatfield finished with 11 points and Rash seven to go with seven assists.

Transy finished the game shooting 46 percent from the field and was 23 of 33 from the free throw line. Carthage shot 42 percent for the second half and 42 percent for the game, but had just 14 free throws, making 11.

Djurickovic, who came into the contest averaging 21 points a game for Carthage, fouled out with 17 points, nine assists, and five rebounds.  Thompson and Tyler Pierce each scored 11.

Transy returns to Heartland Conference play on Wednesday, traveling to Defiance for a 7 p.m. matchup.
