Miller Earns 200th Win as Whitewater Defeats Pomona-Pitzer

More news about: UW-Whitewater

Better late than never.  Despite a mixup in the start time and fighting the infamous LA traffic, UW-Whitewater defeated Pomona-Pitzer 67-57 Sunday night in Los Angeles giving UW-W head coach Pat Miller his 200th win in his tenth season at Whitewater.

UW-W had bus legs for the first few minutes, falling behind 7-0.  Junior center Chris Davis helped UW-W close the gap to 13-9, scoring seven of the Warhawks' points.  Davis tied the game at 19-19 with a three pointer with 9:54 on the clock, and freshman guard Eric Bryson followed with another three at 9:09 to give Whitewater its first lead.  At 8:39 Davis connected again from long range to give UW-W a 9-0 spurt and a 25-19 lead.  With 6:24 on the clock senior guard Phil Negri's three put Whitewater on top 30-21, the largest lead of the half, equaled at 4:16 on a layup by sophomore guard Antone Byrd.  UW-W led 33-29 at the half.

Davis led both teams with 14 first half points, with junior forward Greg Wright, who came in averaging 8.9 points per game, reaching double figures with 10 for the Sagehens.  Whitewater shot just 33% in the first twenty minutes, but Pomona-Pitzer wasn't much more accurate, hitting 39%.  Six of UW-W's makes were threes to just one for the Sagehens, and Whitewater had a lead at the line, making 5-7 to 2-2 for Pomona-Pitzer.

Pomona-Pitzer managed to stay close, still within 44-39 with 15:00 left, but by 12:58 it was up to double digits at 49-39 where, except for two free throws with 0:15 left, it stayed the rest of the way.  UW-W's lead reached 16, 64-48 on a pair of DJ Dantzler free throws at 1:14.

The Warhawks never did get the hang of shooting in Rush Gymnasium, hitting just 34%, but the Sagehens didn't fare much better at 31%.  UW-W made the most of its attempts, hitting 11 threes, while PP made three.  Whitewater also went to the line 22 times, making 16, while Pomona-Pitzer was 12-13.  The Warhawks had just nine turnovers, tying the season low also recorded in the December 18 win over Marian University.

Davis scored just two points in the second half, but notched his fifth consecutive double double with 16 points and ten rebounds. Dantzler shared team scoring honors with 16 points, and Byrd added 13.  Wright led all scorers with 19 points, going 9-13 from the floor.  Sophomore guard James Moss went 7-8 from the line while contributing 17 points for the Sagehens.  Freshman forward Jake Klewer tied Davis with ten boards.

With its fourth straight win UW-W improved to 8-4 overall.  The Sagehens, 3-7, suffered their fourth straight loss.

Whitewater will check the starting time, twice, and leave more time for traffic before facing Occidental College at 9:00 p.m. (Central) Monday.  UW-W will resume Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday, January 8 at 4:00 with UW-River Falls visiting Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
