Mount Union Survives to Beat Waynesburg in Double OT

ALLIANCE, Ohio--Mount Union senior Ben Hodkinson (Tippecanoe/Harrison Central) scored a career-high 22 points including four-straight free throws to ice a 98-92 double overtime victory over Waynesburg Thursday in Alliance.

Jimmy Wood (Wintersville/Indian Creek) had 20 points, Matt Kiger (Williamstown, W.Va./Williamstown) came off the bench with 20 points, Dave Pellerite (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) had his third double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Matt Wier (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) tallied 11 to lead Mount Union (5-7) to a second straight win.

Waynesburg (4-7) rallied from a 17-point deficit with under 10 minutes to play in regulation. 

The Yellow Jackets six players in double figures and hit 14 three-pointers.  Erik Noone had five of those three's as part of a team-best 19-point, seven-rebound performance.

Waynesburg hit five of its three pointers in the first eight minutes of the game to jump out to a 21-10 lead.

The Jackets extended that lead to as many as 14 points, 28-14, after a three-pointer from Luke Baker with 9:46 left in the frame.

Mount Union rallied with an 18-3 run over the next seven minutes and took its first lead of the game, 32-31 on a pair of Wood free throws with three minutes left in the half.  The Raiders then took a 39-38 lead into halftime.

The Purple Raiders then led by as many as 17 points, 63-46, on a Wood free throw with 9:55 left in regulation.

Waynesburg would chip away and erase a 10 point Mount Union lead, 77-67, over the final 3:18 to tie the game and sent it to overtime.

The Yellow Jackets kept momentum and scored the first five points of overtime to take an 82-77 lead. 

Mount Union came back again and with Waynesburg leading 85-84 the Jackets committed a foul with 1.1 second left and Pellerite made 1-of-2 free throws to keep the game going.

With four Waynesburg fowards fouled out by double overtime, Kiger took over and had five points in the period and along with Hodkinson's late free throws locked down the win.

Mount Union returns to Ohio Athletic Conference next Wednesday at home against first place Marietta.  Tip-off time in Alliance is scheduled for 7:30 pm at The MAAC.
