Marietta routs Redlands 101-67 for 11th Straight Victory

MARIETTA, Ohio — A six-day layoff and a 2,300 mile trip to the west coast could not slow down the Marietta College men's basketball team as it scored a season-high and defeated host University of Redlands (Calif.) 101-67 Wednesday (Dec. 29) night. [Box Score]

Head Coach Jon VanderWal's squad continued its historic start and improved to 11-0, while the Bulldogs fell to 2-7.

Four Pioneers scored in double figures, including sophomore J.J. Martin (Huntington, W.Va./Huntington), who came off the bench to connect on 6-of-8 from the field and 4-of-5 five from long range to score a team-high 16 points while adding five rebounds.

Junior Trevor Halter (Malvern/Malvern) added 12 points, freshman Tyler Hammond (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) had 11 points and junior Conner Kilpatrick (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) scored 10 points, while junior Kevin Knab (Lakewood/Lakewood) and sophomores Scott Kimmey (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) and Jacob Owens (Mansfield/Mansfield) all scored nine points in the win.

Overall, Marietta shot 60.3% (38-of-63) from the field and knocked down 56.5% (13-of-23) from long range. The Pioneers also dominated the boards 42-31 and their bench out scored the Redlands' bench 52-22.

Tristan Kirk led the Bulldogs with 18 points. Jordan Sanvictores added 12 points and Matt Dietrich scored 11 points in the loss for the Redlands, which shot 45.2% (28-of-62) overall and 23.5% (4-of-17) from beyond the arc.

Marietta lead wire-to-wire as a three-pointer from Hammond opened the scoring 16 seconds into the contest and triggered an 8-0 Pioneer run to start the game. Marietta's advantage stayed in double digits for the majority of the first period and it entered the locker room leading by 11 points, 44-33.

The Bulldogs dropped their deficit to nine points, 49-40, with 18:14 remaining in the game, but the Pioneers responded with a 24-8 run over the next nine minutes to builds their cushion to 25 points and continued to extend the advantage to 34 points before the final horn sounded on the 101-67 triumph.

Marietta will look to wrap up the 2010 portion of its schedule without a loss when it visits La Verne (Calif.) University Thursday (Dec. 30) night at 10:30 p.m. EST.
