Davis Sets Stage for Overtime Surge in UW-Whitewater Win

More news about: UW-Whitewater

A whole lot of Chris Davis in the second half bought time for UW-Whitewater to stage a 15-0 run in overtime as the Warhawks defeated Hamline University 91-80 in Kachel Gym in Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin Thursday night.

Hamline never trailed in the first half.  UW-W hung close, trailing by just one, 17-16 after a DJ Dantzler three pointer at 12:24, but the Pipers used a 12-3 burst to stretch the margin to 29-20 on layup by junior forward Mike Campbell with 7:30 on the clock.  Freshman guard Tyler Pannell hit a three pointer as the horn sounded to end the first half, giving Hamline a 42-30 lead heading into the locker room.

Whitewater didn't have any trouble shooting in the half, hitting 42% to 47% for Hamline, but Hamline got off nine more shots than the Warhawks.  More than half, 16, of the Pipers' 30 field goal attempts in the first twenty minutes were outside the arc, where they made six.  Warhawk junior center Chris Davis led both teams with 11 points in the half.

It was the Chris Davis show in the second half.  Whitewater started the half 8-2, six of those points coming on a pair of three point plays by Davis, who scored 12 of Whitewater's first 14 points.  Despite Davis' efforts, Hamline maintained a ten point margin until UW-W point guard Phil Negri hit a three pointer and Dantzler made a pair of free throws to cut Hamline's margin to 56-51 at 11:10.  Both teams lost track of the basket for a while, with senior center Carl Hipp's layup at 8:55 ending the drought and upping the Piper lead to 58-51.  Whitewater's next three points came from Davis at the line, followed by a Davis layup to narrow Whitewater's deficit to 58-56 with 6:02 remaining.

Hamline then hit two free throws to make it 60-56 with 5:24, when the lid came back on the basket until Alex Edmunds' jumper pulled Whitewater back within two, 60-58 at 2:47.  Sophomore guard Antone Byrd tied the game with a driving lay-in with 1:42 left, but sophomore forward Noah Aquirre hit a three to put the Pipers back on top, 63-60.  It was Byrd again, a jumper with 0:59 left, to make it a one point game, 63-62.  With 0:25 left Byrd went to the line and hit the tying free throw.  He missed his second attempt, but Edmunds grabbed the rebound and gave Byrd another shot, which missed with four seconds left.  Hamline had a last second long attempt miss to send the game into OT.

Mike Campbell hit a long three for HU to open the extra session, but it was all purple after that.  The Warhawks scored the next 15 points in a row to end the drama and win going away.

Hamline shot well from the line, 16-18, but Whitewater went to the line 47 times, making 30.  The Warhawks also earned a 52-31 bulge on the glass.

Davis wound up with 32 points, the high for UW-W this season.  He also grabbed 11 rebounds for his sixth double double of the year.  Dantzler added 17 points, hitting 9-10 from the line.  Byrd contributed 15, and Edmunds doubled up on the double double, scoring ten points and collecting a game high -- and team season high, 16 rebounds.

Campbell led Hamline with 15 points, with junior guard Levi Wenrich hitting 10-11 from the line on the way to 14 points.  Hipp, who came in to the game averaging 16.9 points and 10.3 rebounds, fouled out with eight points and a team high nine boards.

UW-W, 7-4, will hop on a plane early Friday to fly to Los Angeles where they have games scheduled Sunday at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and Monday at Occidental College.

Hamline is 3-5.
