Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's men's basketball team defeated visiting College of New Jersey 74-56 in non-conference action on Sunday. The Saints snap a four-game losing-streak with the win over the Lions.
Five Saints (2-8) scored in double-figures, led by sophomore Aaron Walsh with a game-high 20. Freshman Reed Scott added 15 while senior Stephen Simoneau chipped in 11 and freshman Keenan Brown and Mac Kennedy had 10 apiece.
Senior Bryan DeBruin led MU on the boards with a contest-best 13 rebounds while Scott narrowly missed out on his second-straight double-double with nine caroms. Brown paced the offense with seven assists while Scott swatted away three TCNJ (3-8) shots.
A back-and-forth first half saw three ties and 14 lead changes before a Kennedy jumper with five minutes to go put the Saints up 26-25. Marymount would control the frame from then on, closing out the stanza on an 11-2 run to take a 37-27 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Saints continued their momentum and never let the Lions get within fewer than six points the rest of the way. Holding at least a 10 point advantage most of the half, MU kept its double-digit lead for good on a pair of Scott free throws at the 4:13 mark. Marymount would lead by as many as 17 in the second half before a buzzer-beater by Walsh closed out the game up 18 at 74-56
Albert Matlock led the Lions with 17 points while Kyle Rawson added 10. Steve Siracusa led TCNJ with seven rebounds, Brian Kelly had a game-high five blocks and Matlock led both teams with four steals.
Marymount returns to action on December 29 at Hampden-Sydney.
