THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran led by 14 points with under five minutes left in regulation when La Sierra used full court pressure defense to spark a 22-5 scoring run to close out the game and earn an 82-79 victory. The loss snapped a 10-match win streak over LSU dating back to 2002.
Box Score: LSU 82, CLU 79 - F
Following an emphatic dunk by Aaron Van Klaveren giving CLU a 74-60 lead with 5:11 left, it seemed the Kingsmen were in prime position to win their fifth straight home opener.
On the ensuing two LSU possessions Miles Robbins contributed five points including one of his four three pointers cutting the margin to nine. Golden Eagles head coach Derek Robbins called a pair of well-timed timeouts with the first coming after the triple urging his squad to pick up the pressure defense.
Steadily the visiting side climbed back into contention using a stifling defense that forced six turnovers and allowed only five points following the stoppage. Trailing by a single point and under a minute remaining LSU missed a pair of go-ahead attempts, but grabbed its own misses and Robbins called timeout with 43 seconds left.
Out of the stoppage the comeback was complete only seconds later following a Joe Paea jumper that gave LSU a 78-77 lead with 36 seconds remaining.
Kingsmen point guard Kwaminique Brandon reciprocated with a put back layup that took back the lead with 29 seconds left. The Golden Eagles again responded as Daveon Woods made an off balance jumper with 15 seconds remaining giving LSU an 80-79 advantage.
CLU had two more possessions late in the game; the first a missed layup with nine seconds left to take back the lead. The second was a game-tying three point attempt that fell well short as time expired.
La Sierra took the slimmest of leads into halftime using tenacious defense to force 10 Cal Lutheran turnovers. The Kingsmen countered with a 10-point first half from sophomore Brandon and near first half double-doubles from Fisher and Van Klaveren.
After being held to only two points in the first half, Greg Grimm played a major role in the Kingsmen scoring run that pushed them out to a double-digit margin. The senior scored 22 of his 24 points in the second half to head the Kingsmen scoring effort.
As a team, statistically Cal Lutheran held advantages over La Sierra in rebounds (44-31) and free throw attempts (31-21). Despite that the Golden Eagles took 17 more shots, forced 13 more turnovers and knocked down 8-of-14 attempts from downtown.
The duo of Miles Robbins and Isaac Waters combined for 53 points, including all eight triples on only 10 tries. In the previous meeting this pair totaled only 17 points and knocked down just 1-of-8 from three.
CLU received several productive individual efforts including a career-high 17 points from Brandon, and two Aaron double-doubles from Fisher (13 points, 14 rebounds) and Van Klaveren (17 points, 15 rebounds).
