Bridgewater Survives Averett In Double OT, 106-100

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College finished the BC/Don Glick Classic with a 2-0 record as the Eagles outlasted the Averett University Cougars, 106-100, in a double overtime thriller Sunday. The victory avenged an early-season loss to the Cougars in Danville.

The Eagles held a three-point lead with 1:46 left in regulation, but a jumper in the paint by Paul Porter sliced the margin to one and a 3-pointer by Steven Terry gave the Cougars a two-point lead with 1:09 left.

Rick Maloney, the classic's most outstanding player, made 1-of-2 free throws, but Justin Pierce responded with a short jumper for the Cougars to put the visitors up by three, 80-77, with 49 seconds left.

A layup by Maloney cut the margin back to one before Porter hit 1-of-2 foul shots to give the Cougars an 81-79 lead with 13 seconds left.

The Eagles tied the score, 81-81 with 10 seconds remaining when Maloney scored off an assist from Drew Maynard and Averett's Kenny Hart missed a jumper in traffic at the buzzer sending the game to the first overtime.

Averett gained the upper hand early in the first OT and led by five, 89-84, when Pierce knocked down a jumper with 2:28 on the clock

The Eagles battled back and a 3-pointer by Maynard cut the deficitto two. Cody Griffith then came up with a key steal and kicked the ball ahead to Justin Brake. Brake made the layup while being fouled and then added the free throw to give the Eagles a one-point, 90-89, lead with 1:35 left.

Hart converted a three-point to put the Cougars up by two, but Maloney scored on an easy layup with an assist from Maynard to tie the score, 92-92, with 1:01 left.

After an exchange of turnovers, Averett had the last chance to win in the first OT but Hart's 3-pointer from the top of the key caught the back iron and the teams headed to a second overtime.

Maynard opened the second-overtime session with a long 3-pointer and the Eagles kept the lead the rest of the way.

A jumper by Marquis Scott with 3:16 left pulled the Cougars to within one, but Maloney hit 2-of-4 from the foul line and Brake added a layup for a 101-96 BC lead with just 46 seconds remaining.

Maloney finished with his second double-double effort during the classic as he scored a career-high 27 points while also pulling down 12 rebounds. Maynard finished with 18 points and a career-high nine assists and Griffith added 16 points. Kyle Hammond scored 15 points and Mark Gibbs added 10 to round out the Eagles' double-figure scorers.

Terry paced the Cougars with 23 points and Hart added 22. Scott scored 16 points followed by Pierce with 15 and Nick Ford with 12. Averett held a 58-48 margin on the boards with Ford and Scott each pulling down 10 rebounds.
