Farmington men start hot, hold off UMPI

FARMINGTON -- University of Maine at Farmington opened on an 18-2 run and went on to a 69-56 win over University of Maine at Presque Isle in non-conference action today at Dearborn Gymnasium.

Farmington (3-5) is off for break. The Beavers are tabbed to take on Plymouth State on Jan.6 in Plymouth, N.H. The Owls (0-7) are scheduled to meet Eastern Maine Community College Saturday in Presque Isle.

Andrew Dean (Gorham, Maine) led the Beavers with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Eric Taylor (Oakland, Maine) posted 16 points and 12 boards. Dean and Taylor scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, as Farmington took a 39-25 lead into intermission.

Clifford McDonald (Sarasota, Fla.) scored 17 points for the Owls with 13 of those coming in the second half, while Gerardo Vasquez (Houston, Texas) added nine points. McDonald and Vasquez each had six rebounds.

Dean netted five points and Taylor and Yusuf Iman (Auburn, Maine) each added four in the Beavers' 18-2 tear over the first 6:37 of the contest. The lead grew to 20 points in the first half as the hosts carried a 39-25 lead into intermission.

McDonald and Patrick Manifold (Great Yarmouth, United Kingdom) each tallied four points to head an 8-0 spurt for the Owls in the second half to cut the advantage down to 44-34 with 15:29 left in the game. UMPI got the advantage down to nine points on two occasions, the second coming on a Miguel Vazquez (Sarasota, Fla.) trifecta with 3:12 left in the game at 62-53, but three foul shots and a dribble-drive layup by Dean down the stretch helped the Beavers finish off the 69-56 victory.
