(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Freshman shooting guard Willis Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/Fairfield) scored a career-high 18 points to lead the Thomas More College men's basketball team to a 79-77 win over Westminster College today (Saturday, December 11, 2010) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the PAC. With the loss, the Titans fall to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in the PAC.
Thomas More took an early, 19-3 lead when junior shooting guard Todd Krohman (Florence, Ky./Boone County) made a three-pointer at the 11:54 mark of the first half. Westminster answered with a 9-3 run to tie the game at 22-22 with 7:55 to play in the first half when Andy Timko made a three-pointer. The Saints came right back with a 17-9 run to take a 39-31 lead when Fleming made a lay-up with 2:49 to play in the first half. The Titans closed out the half on a 10-3 run to cut the lead to 42-41 at halftime when Doug Smith made a three-pointer with nine-seconds to play in the half.
The Saints opened the second half on a 5-0 run to extend the lead to 47-47 when Fleming made a jumper with 18:41 to play in the game. Westminster answered with a 20-8 run capped by a three-pointer by Smith to take a 61-55 lead with 9:56 to play in the second half. Thomas More responded with an 11-0 run to take a 66-61 lead when senior shooting guard Brian Muse (Bethel, Ohio/Bethel) made a lay-up with 7:33 to play in regulation. The Titans came right back with a 6-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Steve Cress to take a 67-66 lead with 5:37 to play in second half. Thomas More used an 11-5 run to take a 77-72 lead with 33-seconds to play in the game when junior shooting guard Ross Renken (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) made two free-throws. Westminster closed out the game on a 5-2 run, but it wasn't enough as Thomas More won the game, 79-77.
Three other Saints joined Fleming in double-figures as Renken and freshman point guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) each had 11 points and junior center Colt Stafford (Groveport, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) finished with 10. Stafford led the team in rebounds with eight and in steals with four, while Berlekamp and Renken lead the team in assists with five each.
Thomas More will return to action on Thursday (December 16) when it hosts Capital University at 7 p.m. in a nonconference game at the Connor Convocation Center.
