Perfect Fouls Shooting and Key 3s Lead Hobart Past Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Visiting Hobart College used balanced outside scoring and perfect free throw shooting to post an 86-78 men's basketball victory over the University of Rochester at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

Five players combined to hit 12 three-pointers for Hobart (6-2). The Statesmen shot 52.2% outside the arc (12-23) and 22 of 22 from the foul line. Sophomore guard Stefan Thompson was 16 of 16 from the stripe. His 16 made three throws were two shy of the Palestra record of 18, set by Rochester's Jim Klimschot in 1978. 

Thompson led Hobart with 28 points and six assists. Matt Pebole scored 23 points and  Rezin Davis scored 12, all coming on four three-pointers.

Rochester (7-3) put four men in double figures. Nate Novosel scored 23 points. Rob Reid and David Gould had 12 apiece while Mike Labanowski scored 10. The Yellowjackets shot 64% from the floor in the first half, but cooled considerably after halftime. Rochester made 12 of 32 field goal attempts (37.5%).

Thompson's three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer gave Hobart a 37-34 lead at the half. The lead was six early in the second half when Rochester went on a 10-0 run – five points from Novosel – to take a 44-40 lead with 16:29 left. Hobart answered with a 13-3 spurt. Davis hit two treys in the run which put Hobart ahead for good, 53-47, with 13 minutes to play. 

Rochester drew within one, 58-57, on Novosel's layup with 9:16 left. Thompson sank four free throws in a minute. Hobart led by five and the closest the Yellowjackets came after that was three points on two different occasions.

This was a rematch of the Wendy's Classic semifinals which ended with an 80-77 Rochester victory.
