ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick rolled to an 88-77 victory over visiting Western New England College on Thursday night at Lambros Arena. Freshman Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) and junior Chris Ryder (Port Washington, NY/Port Washington) combined for 42 points and 21 rebounds on the night to pace the Hawks, who up their season record to 5-3.
Suderley led Hartwick with 22 points. He also had 10 rebounds. Ryder netted 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshman Anthony Keane (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) made five of his seven shots to finish with 12 points. He also dished out four assists. Martin McCann (Hopewell Junction, NY/Lourdes) contributed 10 points and Andres Carpio (Beacon, NY/Lock Haven Univ.) registered a game-high five assists.
WNEC was led by Chris Devine's career-high 30 points. He connected on 11-of-17 from the floor and hit a game-high three three-pointers. Damon Alson was the only other Golden Bear in double digits with 14 points.
After close to 12 minutes in the first half, Hartwick began to take over the contest with an 11-0 run to go up 31-21 and never trailed again. Suderley scored six points in the run and McCann finished it off with his first three-pointer of the night.
The Bears made it 31-25 with two straight baskets, but the Hawks closed the half on a 7-0 run with a three-point play from Ryder and baskets by Mike Geisser (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) and Christian Laputka (Freeland, PA/Hazleton Area) to lead 38-25 at intermission.
In the second half, Hartwick's lead swelled to 26 points, 66-40, with 12:02 left in the game. The Golden Bears never threatened but did manage to close the gap to 11 points, 85-74, outscoring the Hawks 30-19 over the next nine minutes, but it was too little too late.
The Hawks made 52% of its shots as a team and held a 41-35 edge in rebounds for the game. The Bears made 42% of their shots on the night.
Hartwick next plays on January 3, 2011. The Hawks travel to Selinsgrove, PA to square off against Susquehanna before beginning Empire 8 play on January 7.
