ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Six players scored in double figures for host Nazareth Tuesday as the Golden Flyers won a foul-filled men's basketball game against Buffalo State, 86-79, in Nazareth's home opener at the Kidera Gymnasium.
The Golden Flyers improved to 6-1 overall with the non-conference win. Buffalo State dropped to 4-2 overall.
Junior Jason Corletta scored all of his team-high 18 points in the second half for the Golden Flyers, who pulled away from a 38-38 halftime deadlock. Corletta went 13 for 15 from the free-throw line, including four straight shots with 10:40 left following a pair of technical fouls assessed to the Bengals. Sophomore Dan Waldbillig scored on the ensuing possession to boost Nazareth's lead to a game-high 13 points, 68-55.
The Bengals battled back behind a three-pointer from Jake Simmons and two-point baskets by Anthony Hamer and Justin Mitchell to slice the lead to six, 68-62. Their push continued when a basket by T.O. Jackson cut Nazareth's lead to two, 79-77, with 2:50 left.
Nazareth countered with a bucket by Jake Fladd, two more free throws by Corletta and one by Brad Ford to stretch the lead back to seven, 84-77, with :30 left. After Hamer scored for the Bengals, Corletta sank two more foul shots to provide the final margin.
Nazareth took advantage of the Bengals' physical style by sinking 34 of 44 foul shots as the Bengals committed 31 fouls overall. In addition to Corletta's sharp shooting, Ford went 7 for 8 from the line and scored 13 points.
Waldbillig added 16 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out with four minutes left. Ford had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Phil Scaffidi, Tyshun Stephens and Fladd each scored 10.
Jake Simmons led all scorers with 26 points. Mitchell added 16 points and Jackson 12.
Nazareth led by as many as eight points on two occasions in the first half, but Buffalo State, employing tenacious full-court defensive pressure most of the way, forced 13 first-half turnovers and were able to tie the score at 38-38 on Simmons' basket at the buzzer.
Nazareth opens its Empire 8 Conference schedule Thursday at Ithaca at 7 p.m. The game will be carried on local radio station WHTK (AM-1280 and FM-107.3) and available online at www.whtk.com.
