Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team rolled to its seventh straight win to open the season on Saturday night with a 91-75 home victory over Yeshiva. The Dolphins had four players score in double-figures on the night, with junior Omonya Onwe (Staten Island, N.Y.) leading the way with 22 points.
The two teams stayed close over the first 11 minutes of the first half on Saturday, before the Dolphins put together a 17-4 run to open their largest lead of the firs period at 37-23. Senior captain Dino Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) capped the spurt with one of his four three pointers on the night and sophomore Shaquille Cunningham (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored five points over that stretch.
The Dolphins shot just over 54-percent in the opening frame and forced 11 Yeshiva turnovers. Cody Gauvard (Rockaway, N.Y.) led all scorers at the break with 13 points after going 6-for-10 from the field in the first half.
Mount Saint Vincent did not let its lead dip below double-figures in the second half and had its advantage bulge to as many as 20 points after a Sean Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y.) triple with 12:11 left in regulation time. Caputo finished the night with nine points after going a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc.
The Mount finished up the game, shooting better then 50-percent for the third time this season with the 54.8 mark is the second highest of the season. The Dolphins also canned seven three-pointers on the night and shot 41.2-percent from behind the arc.
After struggling from the free-throw line for the first five games, the Dolphins are now shooting 78.7-percent from the line over their last two contests. After shooting just under 81-percent against Old Westbury, the Mount went 16-for-21 from the line on Saturday night.
Onwe continued his strong early season play against Yeshiva, going 9-for-14 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. He also swiped a pair of steals and blocked two shots in the winning effort. Gauvard also had a strong night for the Dolphins, pouring in 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting. He also grabbed six rebounds and collected three steals.
Johnson and Cunningham rounded out the quartet in double-figures on Saturday, scoring 14 and 13 points respectively. Johnson went 4-for-9 from long distance on the night, while Cunningham finished with a season-high in scoring after going 6-for-8 from the floor.
Alvin Pegues (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored nine points in the second half for the Dolphins and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Pegues and Mark Waite (Chicago, Ill.) each paced the Mount with four assists on the night.
The win extends the Mount's winning streaks and improves it to 7-0 overall on the season and 4-0 in Skyline Conference action. The Dolphins will look to make it eight in a row on Tuesday night when they host league rival Sage. Tip-off at the Peter Jay Sharp Center is slated for 7:00 p.m.
