Blue Devils Trim Warhawks 85-80

UW-Stout defeated UW-Whitewater, in the "others receiving votes" category of the D3hoops.com poll, 85-80 at Johnson Fieldhouse in Menomonie Saturday evening.

With the game tied 10-10 at 16:51 the Blue Devils went on an 11-2 run to take a 21-12 lead with 13:45 left in the half.  By 6:27, when Antone Byrd hit a three-pointer for the Warhawks, UW-W managed  to take back the lead, 32-31. Alex Edmunds dunk at 4:00 gave Whitewater its largest lead of the half, 38-34.  The Blue Devils used a 14-4 run to end the half, with senior guard Eric Hostetter accounting for ten of those points on two threes and a pair of layups.  Stout led 48-42 at intermission.

Stout maintained a single digit lead early in the second half, twice leading by eight points.  Over a four-plus minute span early in the second period, UW-W went on a 10-2, with scoring from four players, run to knot the game at 54-54 at 11:27. 

Junior center Chris Davis made a three pointer to give the Warhawks their first lead of the half, 58-56 at 10:58.  That would also prove to be UW-W's largest lead of the half, which the Warhawks also managed at 9:33, 60-58, on a D.J. Dantzler jumper at 9:33.  Whitewater and Stout exchanged baskets and the lead, with UW-W on top for the last time at 7:55, 64-63.  The Warhawks were still within one, 72-71, with 4:25 left, but the Blue Devils never relinquished the lead.  Senior guard Jerrod Buchholtz scored six points for UW-S in the last 2:30 of the game.

Stout shot 55% from the floor, Whitewater 46%.  Both teams made ten threes, but Stout was 10-17 (58%) and Whitewater 10-27 (37%). 

Dantzler led UW-W 21 points and three steals, with Davis contributing 18 and a game high nine rebounds.  Edmunds and Byrd added 15 and 13 points, respectively. Phil Negri dished out a game high seven assists for the Warhawks.  Hostetter took game scoring honors with 25 points, hitting 5-7 from three point range.  Senijor center Mahlon Thomas chipped in with 17 points and a team high eight boards.  Buchholtz scored 15 points and freshman forward Alex Oman added 11, hitting all four of his shots from the floor. 

UW-W is 3-2 overall, 1-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The Warhawks will travel to number one ranked UW-Stevens Point Wednesday.  UW-Stout is 4-3 overall and 1-1 in league play.
