SALISBURY, Md.--Senior Tyler Snoots and junior Herb Bowen combined for 33 points to lead the Hood College men's basketball team (3-2, 1-0 CAC) to a 64-49 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the Salisbury University Sea Gulls (2-3, 0-2 CAC) Wednesday evening.
Snoots and Bowen, two of the taller players on the Blazer roster, proved to be both inside and outside threats, as the duo combined to sink 13-of-17 from the field and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc to propel Hood to a key league victory on the road. Bowen finished with 13 points, setting a new career-high, while Snoots connected on his first six shots from the floor and registered a team-best 18 tallies.
The impressive scoring efforts by Snoots and Bowen compensated for the fact that Hood's leading scorer, Brenden Straughn, was limited to just 1-of-3 shooting from the field.
Hood posted an efficient all-around effort, boasting a .542 shooting percentage on the night, as nine of the 10 Blazers to check in to the game contributed at least one field goal.
The Sea Gulls opened the scoring on their first possession but Hood's Justin Stone knocked down a trey and converted a layup on consecutive trips down the court to give the Blazers a lead they would not relinquish. Hood led 35-24 at halftime and Salisbury got no closer than nine the rest of the way.
Cameron Cook tallied nine points on 4-of-9 shooting while Stone finished with seven points and a career-high six steals. Junior Tory Wilson, Hood's leading scorer from the 2009-10 season, saw his first action of the year and logged 11 minutes off the bench. Wilson connected on 2-of-4 from the floor and had three rebounds. First-year Justin Bowens scored the first four points of his Blazer career in addition to registering two steals and two assists.
SU's Chris McGrew led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting in defeat.
Hood continues CAC action Saturday hosting the Wesley College Wolverines at 6 p.m. at the Odom Fitness Center at Fort Detrick.
