UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH – Senior wing Reid Anderson (Avon Lake, OH/St. Edward) - pictured - scored a season-high 29 points, but it wasn't enough as the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball lost its fourth straight game, 86-69, to Olivet College on Saturday, November 27 to open up the 2010 John Steadman Classic, hosted by John Carroll University.
Case dropped to 1-4 overall with the loss and will have to regroup quickly, as the team is slated to play in the tournament's consolation game tomorrow against hosting John Carroll University at 1:00 p.m. JCU lost to Bethany College, 70-69, in the 7:00 p.m. game on Saturday night. Olivet improved to 3-2 overall on the season and will face Bethany in the 3:00 p.m. championship match. Both games will take place in the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
Sophomore forward Austin Fowler (Farmington Hills, MI/Brother Rice) recorded his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, but Case was unable to contain a trio of Olivet scorers in double figures.
The Spartans led 11-10 eight minutes into the first half after a jumper by sophomore guard Robert Scott (Paoli, PA/Conestoga), but a pair of free throws gave Olivet the advantage on their next trip down the court.
Olivet stretched its lead as far as eight in the first half, but Case managed to trim the advantage back down to 39-38 heading into the locker room after a buzzer-beating trey by Anderson.
Olivet then began the second half on an 8-4 run before trading buckets with the Spartans on two-straight possessions to hold a six-point lead, 52-46, with 12:03 remaining in the game. Case narrowed the margin to two points on an Eric Duerr (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) lay-in at the 9:32 mark.
Olivet would allow the Spartans to get no closer, however, as Olivet barreled its way to a 20 point lead before winning by 17.
After burying six three-pointers in the first half, Case went cold from behind the three-point line in the second, hitting on just 1-of-8 attempts as Olivet muscled its way to the free throw line a total of 21 times. The Comets shot down Case from the charity stripe all game, hitting on 35-of-41 total attempts.
