PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Juniors Jason Corletta (Pittsford Sutherland) and Phil Scaffidi (Buffalo, NY) led a four-player Nazareth contingent in double figures with 22 and 21 points repsectively Wednesday to lift Nazareth to an 83-74 men's basketball victory over Roberts Wesleyan in the opening round of the Wendy's College Classic at St. John Fisher.
Nazareth improved to 3-1 overall and advanced to Friday's semifinals against Brockport at 8 p.m. at Roberts Wesleyan. Brockport defeated RIT, 54-50, in another first-round game. RIT and Roberts will play Friday at 6 p.m. at Hobart in a consolation game.
Nazareth led for most of the way against Roberts, but the Raiders kept the game close by hitting 16 of 32 second-half shots, including three three-point baskets. Nazareth, though, had an aswer for every Roberts run.
Scaffidi scored 16 of his points in the first half and Corletta added nine points as the Golden Flyers surged to a 40-32 lead. Nazareth extended its lead to as many as 13 points, 47-34, early in the second half following a 7-2 run that was capped by a basket by Dan Waldbillig (Pittsford Sutherland) with 17:27 to play,
Roberts crept back within striking distance, slicing Nazareth's lead to four points on four separate occasions. A three-pointer by Roberts' Dan Foley (Irondequoit) made the score 76-72 Nazareth with 1:47 left.
Corletta made four free throws, freshman Brad Ford (Victor, NY) added two more and Scaffidi hit another in the closing seconds to keep Nazareth in front.
Corletta's points came on 6 for 12 shooting with one three-pointer and 9 of 10 free throws. Scaffidi was 9 for 16 from the field with one three-pointer. Sophomore Tyshun Stephens (Newark, NY) contributed 16 points and five assists and Ford added a career-high 14 points. Waldbillig, Nazareth's leading scorer entering the game, was held to eight points, but grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Nazareth outrebounded a taller Raider team 39-32 and finished 29 for 60 from the field (48.3 percent) for the game and 6 for 11 from three-point range.
Foley scored 19 points for Roberts (6-3). Jordan Heath (Irondequoit) added 17 points and eight rebounds and Rashaad Stokelin (Irondequoit) had 12 points.
