HONOLULU - David Riley scored 26 points to lead 16th-ranked Whitworth to an 86-67 win over Luther in the final contest of the Surf's Up Classic on Saturday evening at Kalani High School.
The Pirates improved to 4-0 overall and won the tournament with a 2-0 record after host California Lutheran was knocked off by Northwest Conference member Pacific (Ore.) on Saturday. Whitworth was the only 2-0 team in the five-school event. The Norse fell to 0-4.
Riley opened the game with a three-pointer and the Pirates never trailed. Whitworth grabbed a 22-13 lead on a three by Jack Loofburrow with just over nine minutes to play in the first period, then stretched that lead to as many as 17 points (37-20) on a three-pointer by Wade Gebbers. Luther got within 39-27 on a three-pointer by Dane Larson at the first half buzzer.
The Norse continued to chip away to within 43-37 in the first four minutes after halftime, but Loofburrow answered with a three pointer and minutes later Riley hit another three to put the Pirates ahead 53-39. Whitworth would steadily pull away, opening a 68-48 lead on a three by Riley and eventually leading by as many as 28 points (80-52) on a three by Chase Ramey with 5:40 to play.
Whitworth shot 47% (27-57) from the field, 52% (15-29) in the second half. The Norse shot 44% (20-45), and only 19% (3-16) from three-point range. The Pirates took advantage of 12 offensive rebounds to generate 12 more shots than Luther.
Loofburrow scored 21 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds off of the bench. Michael Taylor (Brewster) added 17 points and seven boards and led the Bucs with five assists.
Larson led the Norse with 19 points and Tyler Wedemeier added 13 points.
Whitworth will open defense of its Northwest Conference title on the road next Friday and Saturday at Lewis & Clark and Linfield, respectively. Both games will get underway at 8:00 p.m.
