While the Runnin Royals may not have hit their stride so far this season, they have certainly been one thing - effective. Eastern Mennonite kept with that trend Saturday afternoon, picking up 19 steals in a 77-63 road win over Emory & Henry to open the Old Dominion Athletic Conference season.
EMU's men are now 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the ODAC, despite shooting just 31.6% in three pointers Saturday.
The two teams traded leads to open the game, with the Wasps holding their only lead early at 4-3. EMU then scored five straight and never gave up the advantage.
George Johnson (Richmond, Va./Miller School) later scored eight unanswered points for the men to blow open a 25-13 cushion. EMU was up 37-24 at the half.
The Runnin Royals scored the first seven points of the second to push the lead to 20. They were up by as many as 25 before Emory & Henry trimmed the advantage in the final minutes to produce the final 77-63 margin.
Johnson led all players with 24 points, as he hit three of six three pointers and was 7-7 from the free throw line. Todd Phillips (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) had a strong second half and finished with 19 points, including going 8-10 from the stripe. He added five steals and four assists.
D.J. Hinson (Newport News, Va./Menchville) also hit double figures with 12 points and three steals. Eli Crawford (Staunton, Va./R.E. Lee) charted team highs of seven rebounds and six steals.
Despite hitting only six of their 19 three point shots, the Runnin Royals got into the paint and finished with a 45% shooting clip, going 27-for-60 overall. They were also 17-for-24 from the free throw line.
Emory & Henry was led by Terrance Grigg's 19 points. Kyle Sensabaugh had 10 points and a game high eight rebounds as the Wasps dominated the boards, 49-32.
The home team also had 25 turnovers, boosted by EMU's 19 steals. E&H connected on just 35% of its shots.
The No. 3 Runnin Royals take their perfect record into a big week of their schedule, hosting two of the ODAC's toughest teams. Wednesday Hampden-Sydney comes to Harrisonburg for a 7:00pm match. Next Saturday No. 2 Randolph-Macon comes to town. The Tigers were picked fourth and R-MC was tabbed second behind EMU in the ODAC's Preseason Poll.
