LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Kaleb Shelton hit the game-winner as the buzzer sounded to give the University of Puget Sound men's basketball team a 77-75 victory over Occidental in overtime. Shelton scored four of his team-high 18 points in the last 11 seconds of the game to give the Loggers the victory.
With 11 seconds left, Shelton hit two free throws to tie the game at 75-75. The Loggers (2-2) then forced a Tigers (2-1) turnover to regain possession. Shelton then beat the buzzer for the Logger victory.
"Kaleb played like a warrior tonight," said head coach Justin Lunt. "I think we'll continue to get better as the season goes on. We showed a lot character and we played our hearts out."
Shelton led four Loggers in double digits. Edric Egberaure added 15 points, Aaron Edwards scored 11 points and Erik Evans tallied 10 points. In addition to his 18 points, Shelton recorded his second double-double of the season with 10 rebounds as well.
The game was balanced through the first half as the Tigers and Loggers fought to a 26-26 tie at the break. With the game tied at 36-36 at the 15:45 mark, the Loggers went on an 11-0 run to take a 47-36 lead.
"I thought our pressure was very good tonight and we really forced the tempo," added Lunt. "We executed game plan and came away with big win."
However, the Tigers came back to take a 56-54 lead at the 10:09 mark. The teams traded baskets through the last 10 minutes with Egberaure hitting a three-pointer with just under two minutes to tie the game at 67-67 and eventually send it into overtime.
Neither team held more than a two point lead through the extra period with the Loggers pulling away on the last shot.
Deshun McCoy led the Tigers with a game-high 22 points to lead a trio of Tigers in double digits. Kris Montoya added 17 points and Sam Stapleton scored 11 points to pace the Tigers.
The Loggers face Chapman tomorrow at 5 p.m. in Rush Gym on the campus of Occidental College.
