Rutgers-Newark University (4-0 Overall, 4-0 NJAC) shot just under 53 percent from the floor and five Scarlet Raiders scored in double figures as the City College of New York men's basketball team (2-1 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC) lost for the first time this season, falling by score of 95-63 Tuesday evening at the Golden Dome in Newark, NJ.
The Scarlet Raiders never trailed in the contest, and led from the 16:25 mark of the first half on. Rutgers-Newark held a 15 point lead at the half and eventually built its advantage up to as many as 42 points in the second session before holding on for the 32 point victory. The Scarlet Raiders hit 52.9 percent of their shots for the evening (36-68) compared to just 41.2 percent for CCNY (23-57). The Scarlet Raiders also protected the ball better, committing just 11 turnovers while forcing 20 Beaver mistakes. Rutgers-Newark also dished 23 assist to CCNY's 12.
In the victory for the Scarlet Raiders, Greg Moore knocked down six of his eight attempts from the floor – including a five-of-seven clip from downtown – equaling 17 points for the evening. Christian Garcia came off of the bench and netted 16 points, snatched three rebounds and dished a pair of assists, and Chris Diaz hit five of their seven shots and contributed 13 points. Tyler Jones helped with 12 points, and Pedro Burgos added 10.
Despite the loss for the City College of New York, four players scored in double figures including Terence Johnston who tallied a game-high 15 points off of the bench to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Israel Vickers added 13 points, three rebounds and two assists, and Kenny Rubenstein helped with 12 points. Brendan Barile netted 10 points and grabbed five rebounds (four on the offensive glass).
The City College of New York men's basketball team will look to get back on track on Saturday afternoon as the team travels to Patchogue, NY to play another non-conference contest, this time against the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's College of Long Island. Start-time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
