Mount Union Tripped Up By Trine, 59-55

ANGOLA, Ind.--Mount Union held Trine 31 points under its average but the Thunder rallied in the second half and hit a couple key shots late to beat the Purple Raiders, 59-55 Tuesday in a non-conference men's basketball matchup.

Ian Jackson scored 20 of his career-high 28 points in the second half to lead Trine (3-1) to its third straight victory.

Mount Union (0-3) had three players in double figures as Jimmy Wood(Wintersville/Indian Creek) had 13 points, Ben Hodkinson (Tippecanoe/Harrison Central) had 12 points and Matt Wier (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) with 10 points.

Trine led 22-20 at the half, but Mount Union opened the second half on a 13-2 run to take a 33-24 lead with 11 minutes to play. 

The Thunder countered with a 15-2 run of their own to retake the lead 39-35.

Trine would keep the Raiders at arm's length the remainder of the game.  Mount Union closed to within a bucket, 57-55, as Wier hit a three-pointer and converted free throw with 40 seconds left.

Mount Union got the ball back and failed to convert a shot in closing seconds while Trine canned two free throws for the 59-55 final.

The Raiders go back on the road this weekend playing Rust (Miss.) and Piedmont (Ga.) Saturday and Sunday at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee.
