MSOE men's basketball defends All-Engineers Classic crown

The Raiders defended their title in the MSOE All-Engineers Classic by defeating Carnegie Mellon 82-62 in the tournament's championship game Sunday afternoon at the Kern Center. MSOE was led by senior Austin Meier who was named tournament MVP after scoring 19 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Raiders senior Bennett Deacon was named to the All-Tournament Team as he scored nine points and dished out five assists.

After trailing early in the first half, MSOE went on a 16-0 run to take a 26-10 lead against the Tartans. Then in the second half, another big run (13-1) put the Raiders up 73-50 as they cruised to the tournament title. Freshman John Cording came off the bench to score 15 points on 6-7 shooting from the field. He also was 3-4 from three-point range. Junior Eric Bohrer put in nine points for the second straight game while junior Robert Linzmeier also had nine points. Sophomore Victor Bande logged eight points off the pine for the Raiders.

MSOE shot 50% from the field for the game and committed just nine turnovers while forcing 18 Carnegie Mellon turnovers. The Raiders were efficient from the free-throwing line going 11-13 from the charity stripe.

Earlier in the day, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy knocked off Caltech 67-59 in the tournament's consolation game. The other members of the All-Engineers Classic All-Tournament Team are Shane Rife and John Duhring from Caltech, Tom Izzo from USMMA and Ryan Elmquist from Caltech.

Tuesday night, MSOE (2-0) will face Beloit for a 7 p.m. tip at the Kern Center.
