OSWEGO, NY– York senior Marcel Esonwune grabbed 20 rebounds, surpassing 1,000 for his career as the York College men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season, defeating SUNY Brockport 77-57 on Saturday afternoon at the Max Ziel Tournament held at Oswego State. Esonwune reached the milestone with his second rebound of the day at the 17:43 mark of the first half.

Esonwune added ten points and three blocks on the night, to go along with his 20 boards.  He now has reached the 1,000 plateau for both points and rebounds.

Although Esonwune stole the headlines on this day, a pair of juniors carried the team offensively and helped York (1-3) get its first win of the year.  William Holley continued his strong play to start the season, scoring a game-high 27 points and grabbing 13 rebounds and Kevin Lausell finished with a career-high 26 points for York.

The two teams went back and forth throughout most of the first half until York went on a 9-2 run just before halftime, after Lausell drained three three-pointers in a row.  However, a buzzer-beater by Brockport's Zach McTigue made the score 30-26 in favor of York at halftime.

York struggled early in the second half, not scoring for nearly the first four minutes of action. Brockport took advantage and took a 35-30 lead.  York responded and eventually tied the score at 38-38 thanks to three straight buckets from Holley.   The Cardinals took over from there, out-scoring Brockport 39-19 the rest of the way to earn the victory.

Holley was named to the all-tournament team for York after averaging 23.5 points in two contests this weekend.

York will return to action next Friday when they travel to Virginia for the Christopher Newport Tournament.
