DC’s Offense Continues to Sizzle in 92-77 Victory

WHEATON, Ill. – The Yellow Jackets eclipsed the 90-point barrier for the third time in as many games to open the 2010-2011 campaign, en route to scoring a convincing, 92-77, victory over Covenant in the consolation game of the Lee Pfund Classic hosted by Wheaton College.

After lighting up No. 21 UW-Whitewater for 54 points in the first half on Friday, the Jackets used a 55-point outburst in the final 20 minutes on Saturday to open up a five-point halftime cushion. DC assisted 22-of-32 buckets on the night and connected on 23-of-24 attempts from the charity stripe to distance itself from the Scots.

Logan Wolfrum led the charge with a career high 16 dimes to go with 17 points for his first collegiate double-double, while Kevin Tietje posted his second collegiate double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The remaining three starters also scored in double figures for the Purple and Gold, as Kyle Tietje ended with 18 points and seven boards, Anthony Brown tacked on 12 points and Leroy Lewis ended with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The night ended better than it started for Defiance however, as a sluggish start put the Jackets in a 28-23 deficit with 5:38 to go in the opening stanza. A 12-2 spurt put DC up by a 35-30 edge and the margin stayed at five heading to the break with Defiance in front 37-32.

After a Covenant triple opened the second half, Defiance used an 11-2 rally to build a 48-37 advantage. DC would push the spread into double figures for good moments later on a pair of Ryan Hicks free throws, amidst a 13-3 charge that gave DC a comfortable 69-52 lead with 10:55 left in the game. The gap would swell to as many as 19 points, before the Jackets settled for the 92-77 victory.

Defiance (2-1) will look to continue filling the nets on Tuesday, when it takes its 91.0 points per game scoring average to Ohio Northern (0-0) for a 7:30 pm non-conference clash.
