CHESTER, Pa. – Sophomore forward Sean Gallant (Jackson, Mich.) scored 15 points and classmate Wesley Reed (Piqua, Ohio) added 14 to help the Adrian men's basketball team to a 54-43 win over Wentworth in the Third Place Game of the 2010 Widener Tip-Off Tournament. The win evens Adrian's record at 1-1 while the Leopards fall to 0-4.
A back-and-forth first half saw five ties and five lead changes, with the largest lead coming early in the game when the Leopards took a 7-2 lead on a senior forward Sam Herrick (Duxbury, Mass.) layup, which followed a junior guard Eric Prue (Auburn, Maine) three pointer. The Bulldogs' largest lead was three, which came twice, including with 5:44 left when Gallant drained a three pointer. Adrian led, 21-20, at the break, despite Wentworth shooting 53.3 percent (8-for-15) from the floor and holding the Bulldogs to 33.3 percent (7-for-21).
The Bulldogs took the lead for good to open the second half of play, using a 13-3 run over the first 5:06 to pull ahead, 34-23. Wentworth pulled within six on three separate occasions, including when sophomore forward Corey Therriault (Auburn, Maine) hit a layup with 9:13 to play. Back-to-back three pointers by Reed, however, extended Adrian's lead to 45-33 with 7:59 remaining. The Bulldogs would lead by as much as 15 with 2:07 left before four straight points by Therriault accounted for the final margin of 11.
Therriault led Wentworth with 15 points to go along with three assists. Senior guard Keenan Burke-Pitts (Auburn, Mass.) had seven points, while junior guard Adam Dombrowski (Dunstable, Mass.) had four assists. The Leopards were outrebounded by a 31-18 margin, including 13-4 on the offensive glass. That lead to an 18-2 advantage for Adrian in second-chance points.
Wentworth has its home opener against Coast Guard on Tuesday, November, 30.
