Viking men control Macalester, begin season 1-1

Saint Paul, Minn- The Bethany Vikings improved to 1-1, beating the Macalester Scots 90-83. The Vikings dominated most of the game, and carried a lead from half-way through the first half to the end of the game.

For the first ten minutes of the game it appeared it was going to be a close match-up, with the teams see-sawing back and forth for the lead, the score closely contested at 22-21 in the Vikings favor with nine minutes remaining in the half. Then the Vikings turned up the heat. For six minutes Bethany stopped Macalester from scoring, going on a 10-0 run that did not end until the Scot's hit a jumper with 2:51 remaining in the half. From there the Vikings held onto a lead, taking a 41-29 advantage going into half-time.

Macalester came out of the break ready to fight, and shrunk Bethany's lead down to 3 within the first five minutes of the half. Then the Viking's turned up the heat again. Aided by an 8-0 run sparked by Derek Peterson's (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) 3-pointer, the men from Mankato rolled out a lead that reached 20 points with ten minutes left to play. Bethany easily coasted from there to a 90-83 final score.

Garrett Benson (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Mayo) came off the bench to lead the Viking onslaught with 30 points, and Peterson contributed an effort worthy of a double-double, scoring 12 and snagging 10 rebounds.

The Vikings will be at Carthage in Kenosha, Wisconsin, for a weekend tournament with games Friday and Saturday, times TBA.
