GREENSBORO, N.C. – Damian Dixon's three-pointer with 18.5 seconds left in overtime lifted Greensboro College to a 76-73 basketball win over Guilford College Monday night in the Greensboro Coliseum.
Dixon scored eight of his game-high 22 points in overtime, including two of his four three-pointers. He also grabbed a key rebound in the waning seconds, drew a foul and iced the win with two free throws with eight seconds left in overtime.
Guilford, ranked 19th in the preseason D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, forced extra time on Josh Pittman's NBA-range three-pointer with one second left in regulation. The Quakers used the momentum gained from the shot to take a 70-65 lead in overtime with 2:09 remaining, but Dixon drained a three to pull the Pride back to within 70-68 with 1:40 left. T.J. Holman's steal and layup 40 seconds later tied the score at 70-70.
The tightly played contest featured 13 ties and 11 lead changes. While the Pride shot just over 37 percent from the field for the game, it made all four overtime field goals, including three three-pointers. Greensboro scored 25 points from 22 Quakers' turnovers, while Guilford scored 19 points from 21 Greensboro miscues.
Daren Dexter contributed 17 points, nine boards and three steals for Greensboro. Holman finished with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Guilford junior Tobi Akinsola enjoyed a career night with 24 points and 14 rebounds, both game-and personal-best figures. He tallied 13 second-half points, including two free throws with 12:14 left in regulation that gave Guilford a 43-35 lead, the game's largest margin.
Pittman finished with 17 points and teammate Justin Stafford contributed a career-high 12 points off the bench.
