Oberlin, Ohio – Sophomore Andrew Fox scored a career-high 24 points and senior Pat Bernhard also added a career-best 19 to lift the Oberlin College men's basketball team to a thrilling 78-72 win over Westminster College on Monday night.
Fox, a native of Tempe, Arizona, also added career-high 14 rebounds to record his sixth career double-double. After a slow start shooting (1-of-6), Fox finished 7-of-14 from the floor and went 8-of-12 at the free-throw line.
Junior Josh Merritt and rookies Geoff Simpson and Emmanuel Lewis each added eight points in the win.
The Yeomen jumped out to a quick 6-0 edge, but the Titans eventually tied things up at 20 at the 11:06 mark of the opening half. OC held a slight 30-27 edge with five minutes left in the frame, but Mazi Farris would cap off a 9-2 Yeomen run to close out the stanza with a tip-in at the buzzer – giving the home team a 39-29 cushion at the break.
A stingy Oberlin defense held the Titans to just 27.3-percent (9-of-33) shooting in the first half.
In the second half the Yeomen would build their advantage to as many as 15, taking a 50-35 lead with 14:36 left to play.
However, Westminster found a way to crawl back into the game, using an 18-8 spurt to make it 58-53 with just 7:50 to go. Shortly there after, Merritt would foul out of the game, forcing the Yeomen to use an inexperienced backcourt.
A nice cut to the basketball by Lewis for a lay-up resulted in a 70-60 OC lead with 3:25 left, but the Titans still had one more run in them. Doug Smith, who led Westminster with 19 points, knocked in a triple-try to make it 70-67 with 1:26 to go. However, Fox responded by burying a deep three-ball of his own with the shot clock winding down. On the ensuing possession the Yeomen defense came up big as Charlie Crawford-Silva blocked Smith's three-pointer.
Fox and Lewis would closeout the game, making five charity tosses over the final 41 seconds.
Oberlin shot 47.3-percent (26-of-55) on the night while holding the Titans to 36.4-percent (28-of-77). OC also had a slim 43-40 edge on the bounds.
The Yeomen will return to action on November 23 at Hilbert.
