In a game that featured seven lead changes in the final seven minutes, DePauw defeated No. 14 Washington U. 83-73 to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It was one of two first-round games on Thursday night, as teams squared off with winners getting set to face the two teams with first-round byes.
Luke Lattner came off the bench to score 18 points, and Tommy Fernitz scored all 13 of his points in the second half to lead the Tigers, who improved to 21-9. Wash U's season ended at 20-6.
Bryson Fonville hit 14 consecutive free throws in the final 3:04 en route to 38 points as Catholic advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years, defeating Alvernia 87-80.
Fonville was 9-of-13 from the field and 20-of-21 from the line. With CUA clinging to an 80-76 lead, he made seven of eight foul shots in the last 25.4 seconds to seal the win. Jay Howard added 19 points, and Corey Stanford had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Alvernia, the champion of the Commonwealth Conference, had won seven consecutive games coming in, while Catholic had lost two of its last three. The Cardinals move on to face Randolph-Macon at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
