Jake Davis shot down top-ranked UW-Stevens Point, Morrisville State extended its Cinderella run into the round of eight as the Mustangs knocked off Richard Stockton 88-81 and Dickinson did the same with an 81-71 upset of Wheaton (Ill.).
Davis hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with 21 seconds to go in regulation, then added the game-winner with 3.5 seconds left in overtime to lift Emory to a 76-73 win at UW-Stevens Point. Davis finished with 26 points, including six of the Eagles' 12 in overtime, to lead Emory to the round of eight.
“I didn’t think our team had played its best basketball yet,” Emory coach Jason Zimmerman said. “When you feel like we hadn’t played your best basketball, as a coach, sometimes it's frustrating. But I thought we kept getting better throughout the year. And tonight, I thought we were extremely tough.”
Tyler Tillema led all scorers with 33 points in his final game for UW-Stevens Point. Clayton Heuer added 18 points, while Trevor Hass, who was held scoreless until deep in the second half, chipped in 10.
In Dickinson's win, Gerry Wixted scored a team-high 22 points, including a big 3 to keep the Thunder at bay late in the game, and Adam Honig added 17 to keep the Red Devils' run going. Wixted hit Dickinson's only two 3-point shots. Photo gallery.
"It's funny," Wixted said after the game. "When the first one went in in front of the bench, everybody was laughing. I could hear coach (Alan Seretti) saying, 'no, no, no' when I shot it.
"The second one, I just wanted to be the one to kind of put a fork in it."
Dickinson improved to 24-6, winning its third game in the tournament after entering it as a bubble team and getting sent to Wooster.
The Mustangs got a combined 63 points from their trio of senior guards, as Jailaan Kinsey and Brandon Hanks each tallied 22 points while fellow guard Jordan Prior added 19.
Morrisville State shot 31-for-50 from the floor and 9-for-16 from beyond the arc on a neutral floor at Amherst. Richard Stockton got a game high 28 points from John Blamon.
The Mustangs will get the defending champion on Saturday night, as Amherst cruised past Plattsburgh State 87-63 behind 22 points and 10 rebounds from Tom Killian. Aaron Toomey (15 points, 12 assists) and David George (13 points, 11 rebounds) each had double-doubles as well for the Lord Jeffs. Photo gallery.
Mary Washington's NCAA Tournament run is not over yet, as the Eagles outlasted Virginia Wesleyan 74-70 to move on to the round of eight. Bradley Riester played 39 minutes and scored 23 points for Mary Washington, added a team-high seven rebounds. Virginia Wesleyan star DJ Woodmore was held to nine points and turned the ball over five times. The Eagles host Williams on Saturday night. Michael Mayer scored a team-high 27 points with 16 rebounds and freshman Duncan Robinson added 24 as the Ephs reached the Elite Eight for the second year in a row, defeating Albertus Magnus 110-92. The loss ends the Falcons' most successful season ever at 28-3.
Jordan Nelson scored 22 off the bench and Victor Davis added 19 points and a game-high eight rebounds as Illinois Wesleyan advanced into the sectional finals, defeating Calvin 78-64. IWU hosts Dickinson for the right to go to Salem.
UW-Whitewater put itself one game short of returning to Salem as the No. 3-ranked Warhawks defeated Texas-Dallas 81-63. Whitewater took a double-digit lead in the final three minutes of the first half and held off a charge by the Comets in the middle of the second half to come away with the win. KJ Evans scored 22 for the Warhawks.
