Even so, expectations were still high heading into the tournament, with the Crusaders ranked No. 10, and hosting Trinity (Texas) in the first round. Trinity came in at 20-8, having ripped off a nice run.

UMHB erased an 11-point deficit to tie the game, then take the lead with just over five minutes left to play. The Tigers missed a foul shot that could have tied the game, and allowed the Cru to get two key offensive rebounds. But Trinity finally got the rebound on the third miss, which came with 35 seconds to play. Ryan Beall, one of Trinity's two seniors, then nailed the game-winning three-pointer with just 17 seconds left on the clock. Mary Hardin-Baylor missed its final shot that would have tied the game and Trinity escaped with a 68-66 win.
