The Carthage Firebirds opened CCIW play with an upset win at No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan while the Stockton Ospreys rode a record-setting performance to a win over No. 15 TCNJ. Elsewhere, Mount Union won its OAC opener at No. 24 John Carroll and No. 16 Tufts topped previously unbeaten No. 7 Keene State.

Carthage held No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan’s offense in check and got a big game from sophomore guard Riley Brooks, as the Firebirds upended the Titans, 77-68. Carthage held Illinois Wesleyan to 31 percent shooting in the second half and just 25 percent from behind the arc. Meanwhile Brooks scored 29 points on 12-for-22 shooting and AJ Johnson added 16 points, mostly from the foul line where he went 10 for 11.
Martin Anguelov erupted for 45 points and Stockton shot past No. 15 TCNJ, 105-99, dealing the Lions their first loss of the season. Anguelov hit two of his six 3-pointers late in the game to erase a six-point TCNJ lead and then made two free throws to give the Ospreys a late lead. Anguelov’s 45 points set a new program record for Stockton.
Mount Union and No. 24 John Carroll both shot well in their OAC opener, but the Purple Raiders hit more three-pointers and that lifted Mount Union over the Blue Streaks, 93-82. Mount Union and John Carroll both shot over 45 percent from the field and from behind the arc, but the Purple Raiders hit 13 threes to John Carroll’s seven.
Elijah Farrington scored 21 points and Kevin Moore added 20 off the bench for Mount Union (4-2, 1-0). Luke Frazier paced John Carroll (3-3, 0-1) with 33 points.
Randolph-Macon starts its conference season this week with two games against ranked opponents, and the Yellow Jackets made short work of the first. Randolph-Macon blasted No. 17 Guilford 86-55 behind another strong performance by Amr Areikat. He scored 18 points, including 5-for-9 shooting from three, and tallied six assists.
Randolph-Macon (3-2, 1-0 ODAC) hosts archrival Hampden-Sydney on Saturday. The 12th-ranked Tigers got 31 points from Adam Brazil and held off Roanoke, 85-80.
No 16 Tufts sank 27 free throws, and the Jumbos sank No. 7 Keene State, 88-84, in the night’s lone matchup of Top 25 teams. Scott Gyimesi scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Tufts (7-1) which outrebounded the Owls 42-21. Wesley Odiase posted 27 points in 27 minutes for Keene State (4-1).
NCAC favorite Wooster scored 48 points in the paint and cruised past Hiram, 74-59. The 13th-ranked Scots also got 34 points from their reserves, led by EJ Kapihe who scored 15.
Merchant Marine shut down Coast Guard in the second half, and the Mariners sank the Bears, 67-56. Merchant Marine held Coast Guard to 20 percent shooting after the break and converted 21 turnovers into 17 points. Drew Zalescik led Merchant Marine with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
