John Carroll turned the OAC title race into a two-team affair and Sul Ross State helped Mary Hardin-Baylor move closer to clinching hosting rights for the ASC playoffs. Elsewhere, Webster swept its closest contender in the SLIAC and Hanna Geistfeld entered an exclusive club in Saturday's Division III women's basketball action.

No. 9 John Carroll went into Ban Johnson Arena and all-but-eliminated Marietta from the OAC title picture by beating the Pioneers, 83-67. The Blue Streaks had six players score double figures, led by Gabrielle Gevauden with 17 points. Nicole Heffington posted a double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds) and John Carroll outscored the Pioneers 52-22 in the paint.

John Carroll (17-2, 12-1 OAC) remains tied for first in the OAC standings with No. 12 Baldwin Wallace while Marietta (17-4, 10-4) dropped its third game in five tries. Baldwin Wallace kept pace with a 68-48 victory over Otterbein.

Mary Hardin-Baylor had its game against Texas-Dallas pushed back to Sunday, but the Crusaders still moved a step closer to hosting the ASC playoffs because Sul Ross State knocked off No. 16 East Texas Baptist, 77-73. The Tigers appeared to control the game when Hanna Hudson opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer that put East Texas Baptist in front 62-48. But Sul Ross State went on a 16-2 run capped by Alexis Carmosino's layup that tied the game at 64. The game was still tied at 73 in the final minute until Carmosino struck again, hitting a three-pointer with 19 seconds left. The Tigers missed a three on their next possession and Sul Ross State added a free throw for the final score.

Carmosino finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Sul Ross State (12-9, 8-8 ASC). East Texas Baptist (15-4, 11-3) now sits 2.5 games back of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Johns Hopkins stayed in the race for the top spot in the Centennial Conference and pushed Haverford out of it with a 52-51 overtime win over the Fords. Ally Landau hit a game-tying three for Haverford with 17 seconds left in regulation and the Blue Jays ran down the clock before missing their last shot. In overtime, Diarra Oden was fouled while shooting a three and converted all three free throws for Johns Hopkins, giving the Blue Jays a 52-48 edge. Landau hit another three to pull Haverford within one and Johns Hopkins missed both free throws on its next possession, but Landau's potential game-winning jumper was off the mark.

Johns Hopkins (17-2, 14-1 Centennial) remains 1.5 games behind Gettysburg in the Centennial standings and the teams will meet in Central Pennsylvania on Wednesday night.

Christopher Newport took its new No. 1 ranking to the Midwest for the weekend and defeated Wheaton (Ill.), 69-53. The Thunder hung with the top-ranked Captains until the second quarter when Christopher Newport ripped off a 19-2 run and led 40-19. The Captains’ lead hovered around 20 points the rest of the game. Christopher Newport (18-0) had 18 steals and converted 33 Wheaton turnovers into 33 points. The Captains will travel from the Chicago region to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to play fellow Coast-to-Coast conference member Finlandia tomorrow.

The other three undefeated teams each moved a step closer to winning their regular season conference crowns.

Webster beat Westminster (Mo.), 89-81, and swept the season series with the second place team in the SLIAC. After a back-and-forth first half, Webster grabbed the lead for good with a 9-0 run early in the third quarter. The Gorlocks put the game away in the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run spurt that gave them a 13-point lead. Addison Beussink scored 23 points for Webster (17-0, 8-0 SLIAC).

No. 14 Wisconsin Lutheran got a double-double from Sam Leisemann (19 points, 12 rebounds) and all-but-clinched first place in the NACC with a 76-69 home win over Aurora. Only 19 other Division III women's basketball players have had 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in their career.
