Saturday: ETBU takes Tiger tussle

No. 2 East Texas Baptist won a Texas Tiger Tussle in overtime while All-American Hanna Geistfeld started her season with a stat-stuffing road win. On the men's side, UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse looked good in their Saturday wins.

East Texas Baptist outlasted Trinity (Texas) 76-70 in an overtime game that had 24 lead changes and 16 ties. After the Tigers of Trinity scored the first three points of the extra period, the Tigers of ETBU scored 10 of the next 11, capped by Grace Stephens' three-point play that gave ETBU a 70-63 lead. Ashlyn Milton hit a three to pull Trinity with three, 70-67, with a minute left but All-American Mallory Stephens drew a foul on ETBU's next possession and made both free throws.

Mallory Stephens led East Texas Baptist with 18 points while Mollie Dittmar added 13 points and seven rebounds. Hailey Coleman scored 15 for Trinity.

No. 14 Hardin-Simmons picked up its second win over an SCAC foe in about 24 hours as the Cowgirls beat Schreiner, 72-61. Hallie Edmonson led the way with 20 points and eight rebounds. The other two ranked teams won easily with No. 10 Wartburg crushing Fontbonne 84-37 and Millikin routing Greenville 100-57.

Hanna Geistfeld picked up where she left off last season, posting 29 points and 19 rebounds in Bethany Lutheran's 66-62 victory at Carleton. Geistfeld, who averaged 25 points and 10 rebounds per game last season, scored four straight points late in the fourth to put the Vikings ahead to stay. LaGrange had four starters score double figures, and the Panthers knocked off Oglethorpe, 80-72. Gracie Brunel paced LaGrange with 22 points.

In a scheduling quirk, former Hartwick head coach Katie Marcella made her Union College head coaching debut against Hartwick, and the Hawks beat their former mentor, 54-40. Sisters Molly and Maggie Kirby combined for 25 points for Hartwick. 

Men's recap: Yeshiva, Oshkosh off on the right foot

No. 2 Yeshiva and No. 17 UW-Oshkosh won their season openers on Saturday night, and they looked good doing it.
 
The Maccabees shot 59 percent from the field and held Lycoming to 29 percent shooting, and Yeshiva rolled over the Warriors, 90-54. All-American Ryan Turell tallied 32 points and five rebounds in just 14 minutes. Yeshiva has won 37 straight games dating back to November 9, 2019. Top-ranked Randolph-Macon improved to 2-0 by beating Hood, 84-63. Buzz Anthony led the Yellow Jackets with 26 points. 
 
No. 17 UW-Oshkosh opened its season with an 11-0 run and never trailed on its way to a 90-70 home win over Augustana. Eddie Muench scored 24 points on 9 for 17 shooting with five 3-pointers and All-American Levi Borchert added 19 for the Titans. Photos from this game
 
No. 15 UW-La Crosse used a 14-2 run midway through the second half to pull away from Virginia Wesleyan and eventually put away the Marlins, 65-54. Ethan Anderson scored 19 points for the Eagles (2-0) who shot 50 percent from the field.
 
Alvernia scored the season's first Top 25 upset, as the Golden Wolves knocked off No. 24 New Jersey City, 70-60. Keon Taylor and Malik Green combined to score 40 points for Alvernia which was picked third in the MAC Commonwealth preseason poll.
