Rebecca Tyler has announced her resignation as head coach of the Bryn Mawr basketball team, effective March 26, 2021. After eight seasons at the helm of the Owls, Tyler is leaving to join Utah State as a member of their student affairs office.
Tyler was initially hired in November 2013 on an interim basis and took over a program that had just 14 games scheduled for her first season.
"I am forever grateful to director of athletics Kathy Tierney and to Bryn Mawr College for the opportunity to lead the basketball program," Tyler expressed. "This has been a very difficult decision for me, and Bryn Mawr, my colleagues, and especially my players will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you to the college, parents, and students for all your support over the years."
"Please join me in thanking Becky for her advocacy for our student athletes, as well as her commitment and leadership of the department's antiracism initiatives," athletic director Kathy Tierney stated. "Becky was a strong advocate and supporter of our student-athletes, especially our basketball players. She has been a valued member of our athletics community and we wish her the very best as she pursues other opportunities."
Tyler came to Bryn Mawr and immediately injected a new life into the basketball program while building an eight-year career. She made a major impact on the development of her student-athletes both on and off the court, including having student-athletes named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll 21 times. By serving as a leader of the department's antiracism initiatives, the department's SAAC liaison, a member of the banquet and other event-planning committees, and the coordinator of the department's Overbrook service program, she was also deeply involved in enhancing the experience of every Bryn Mawr student-athlete during her stint as an Owl.
"Thank you to all my alumnae/i and current players for everything you gave this program and for never giving up," Tyler closed. "You have all taught me so much, and I am walking away feeling accomplished because life is not defined by wins. To me, it is defined by the people in it, and I am so lucky that I got to coach so many incredible people. I am excited for the next chapter in my life, and I wish nothing but the best for the next coach and the basketball program. Go Owls!"
A national search for the next Bryn Mawr basketball head coach will be conducted immediately.
"Becky's leadership and hard work positions us for an exciting future for Bryn Mawr Basketball and to continue the work toward inclusive excellence," Tierney said.
