Salisbury stormed out to a 24-point halftime lead over Marietta and rode that bulge to an 88-80 victory over the Pioneers at the Great Lakes Invitational. The Sea Gulls (5-8) scored the final 14 points of the first half, a period in which Marietta (8-1) shot 1-for-19 from three. Gary Briddell scored 35 points for Salisbury, which had lost seven of nine before Saturday's game. On Sunday Marietta will play York (Pa.), which has a six-game winning streak after dropping Ohio Wesleyan, 87-77.
At that same event, Sean Flannery converted a four-point play in the closing minutes to lift John Carroll over Whitworth, 95-89. With the game tied at 89 and 19 seconds remaining, Flannery drained a three and was fouled on the play. His free throw put the Blue Streaks ahead 93-89 and they tacked on two free throws to seal the victory. John Carroll (6-3) got double-digit scoring performances from four starters, including 19 from Jackson Sartain, and ended a three-game losing streak that dated back to December 1. Ben College paced the Pirates (6-2) with 20 points on 7-for-13 shooting.
Sam Moore's jumper with two seconds left was the difference as Mary Hardin-Baylor beat No. 9 UW-Platteville, 74-72. After the Crusaders took a 72-70 lead with 22 seconds left, Platteville pulled even on Quentin Shield's jump shot with nine seconds left. Moore scored on the Cru's next possession and the Pioneers missed a potential game-winning three at the buzzer. Logan Hicks scored 22 points for Mary Hardin-Baylor which improved to 9-1.
The ASC scored another victory over the WIAC as Texas-Dallas edged UW-Stevens Point 61-60 on Kelden Pruitt's bucket with one second left. Ethan Bublitz's free throw staked the Pointers to a 60-47 lead with 6:30 to play, but the Comets shut out Stevens Point the rest of the way and came all the way back for the win.
Conference mate Hardin-Simmons defended Division III's honor with a 113-108 win over NAIA Wayland Baptist in triple overtime. Steven Quinn scored 28 points for the Cowboys in 38 minutes before fouling out and Kyle Brennon added 20 points and five rebounds.
On the women's side, No. 1 Tufts rallied past Christopher Newport 70-65 in a game where the teams combined for more turnovers (48) than made field goals (44). The Jumbos (9-0) trailed 41-34 at the break but held the Captains to 24 points in the second half and 32 percent shooting overall. Erica DeCandido and Molly Ryan combined for 34 points for Tufts, which plays Stevens tomorrow.
No. 4 Mary Hardin-Baylor errupted for 23 points in the fourth quarter and turned a close game into a double-digit victory over Illinois Wesleyan. Hannah Holt keyed the game-deciding 12-0 run with two free throws and then closed it out with a jumper that put the Crusaders in front 58-47. Madison McCoy led Mary Hardin-Baylor (8-1) with 17 points and six rebounds.
