Julie Plant, who had success as a player at Southern Maine and as a coach at Regis, has returned to Division III basketball. She will be the new women's basketball head coach at Pine Manor College.
While there is no official press release on the College's website, Plant is listed on the school's website as the Senior Women Administrator and head women's basketball coach.
Plant's roots in Division III basketball trace back to her time at Southern Maine where she was a standout guard for the Huskies from 1996-2000. Southern Maine went 105-17 with two trips to the NCAA Tournament title game in 1998 and 2000. Plant was a D3hoops.com All-American and the team's leading scorer in her senior season and finished in the top five in program history for points, three-pointers, steals and assists. She was also an All-American in softball and finished as the Huskies' career leader in runs scored, hits, doubles, runs batted in, total bases and stolen bases. She was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
After graduating with her bachelor's degree, Plant spent two seasons on the coaching staff at Elmira where she earned her master's degree in 2002 and a year as an assistant at Division I Rhode Island before taking the head coaching job at Regis in 2005. She led the Pride to the 2013 NCAA Tournament in her final season and an overall record of 124-87 in eight seasons.
In 2013 Plant left Regis to become the head coach at Division II St. Anselm where she went 61-49 in four seasons, including an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2016. Plant stepped down from her position in 2017 and spent last season on the coaching staff at Division I UMass-Lowell.
Plant replaces Alycia Gervais who left Pine Manor after two seasons for the head coaching post at nearby Dean College. The Gators went 10-17 in 2017-18 and open this season at home against Smith on Nov. 13.
