After eight years as the head men's basketball coach at Pfeiffer, Jeremy Currier has announced he has taken the same position at Division II Young Harris College. Currier is one of four coaches in Pfeiffer men's basketball history to record 100 career wins with the Falcons.
"This is a bittersweet moment for us," commented athletic director Bob Reasso. "We are delighted for Jeremy, I think it's a tremendous move for his career. We are also devastated to lose a great coach, a wonderful human being and an outstanding administrator. We are excited for him and we wish him well."
In the first year of its transition from Division II to Division III, Pfeiffer went 21-4 this past season, 15-4 against USA South competition. As a transitioning member, Pfeiffer is not eligible to participate in the NCAA Tournament.
Currier posted 110 wins in eight seasons, including guiding the Falcons to back-to-back 20 win seasons for the first time since 2004-05. In 2017, Currier led Pfeiffer to its first regular season Conference Carolinas championship and NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005. In that same season, Currier was named the Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year as well as the NABC Southeast Region Coach of the Year. Currier's Falcons were ranked as high as No. 22 in the NABC national poll and led Division II in scoring (104.3 ppg), total steals (391), forced turnover (725) and turnover margin (plus-10.4) while breaking 11 school records.
Pete Schoch, who has spent four seasons on the bench for the Falcons and was promoted from assistant coach to associate head coach last summer, was promoted to head coach.
"I am thrilled and grateful to be given the opportunity to become the head men's basketball coach at Pfeiffer University," commented Schoch. "I would like to thank president Colleen Keith, athletic director Bob Reasso and all the members of the Pfeiffer community that have made this dream possible for myself and my family.
"I would also like to especially thank former head coach Jeremy Currier for all he has done for the program and for me personally. His leadership has laid the foundation of fast, aggressive, winning basketball and we will certainly look to continue to play this championship brand of basketball. We will also look to continue to pursue excellence in the classroom and as upstanding members of the Pfeiffer community."
