College Director of Athletics Wendy Smith announced the hiring by release on Thursday.
"Patrick demonstrated enthusiasm for and a clear understanding of the division III student-athlete experience within an academically demanding institution," said Smith in the release. "Coach Doherty's experiences have prepared him well to support our student-athletes both on and off the court and to meet the challenges of establishing a competitively successful men's basketball program that will reflect the values of Haverford College within the highly competitive Centennial Conference."
Doherty was an assistant to Fran O'Hanlon at Division I Lafayette for eight seasons and promoted to associate head coach before the 2015-16 season. Doherty played one season for the Leopards in 2000-01 and graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in philosophy and spanish.
After graduating, Doherty spent one season at Williams College in 2008-09. Doherty's hire continues a run of former NESCAC assistants turned Centennial Conference head coaches. Johns Hopkins hired former Williams assistant Josh Loefler as its next head coach and Muhlenberg named former Amherst assistant Kevin Hopkins as its new head coach. Doherty also spent one season as an assistant at TCNJ.
He replaces Michael Mucci who retired in March with a career record of 185-356 in 22 seasons. He is the program's career leader for coaching victories.
Haverford finished 4-21, 3-15 in the Centennial Conference last season.
