Finlandia men's basketball coach Terry Smith is leaving to pursue new career opportunities, effective April 18, the school announced.
The Lions have gone 20-48 in Smith's three seasons, including 5-18 this past season. Finlandia, an independent isolated in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, was 11-34 vs. Division III schools over that span.
"I have been proud to serve Finlandia University for the past three years," said Smith. "Coaching is so rewarding and the relationships that we develop are long lasting. I would like to thank the student-athletes, the athletics staff, and director of athletics Chris Salani for this opportunity."
Smith had most recently been an assistant coach with the Michigan State women's basketball program and had spent more than a decade as a Division II head coach. He was the head coach at Alma from 2007-08 to 2009-10, going 13-62 in three seasons.
Salani said: "I've appreciated getting to know Terry professionally and I'd like to thank him for his commitment and dedication over the last three years in representing our basketball program. He is an excellent basketball tactician and ambassador of the sport, and we wish him well in his future endeavors."
