Sewanee women's basketball coach Dickie McCarthy is stepping down. After 11 seasons and 96 wins, 180 losses, McCarthy is the winningest coach in the program's history.

He is taking over as the department's facilities and business manager effective July 1.

The Tigers have won 10 or more games just once in the past eight seasons.

“Dickie will bring outstanding skills to the athletic department’s internal operation,” said athletic director Mark Webb. “ He is highly professional and organized, and I’m delighted that he accepted this new role in the department.”

In 2005, McCarthy led the Tigers to the second most wins (19) in school history and was named the SCAC Coach of the Year.

McCarthy played basketball at Sewanee for two years before transferring to the University of Georgia, where he received his bachelor’s degree. He was a member of the 1974-75 Tiger team that finished 20-7 and received a bid to the inaugural Division III NCAA Tournament.

“It has been a rewarding eleven years coaching the women’s basketball team here at Sewanee,” said McCarthy. “I was blessed to coach many amazing student-athletes and hope that, in some way, I have touched their lives as much as they have touched mine.”
