Wrapup: Montclair still running, Scranton splits

Janitza Aquino scored a game-high 20 and Taylor Jeffers and Nicosia Henry added 16 apiece as Montclair State improved to 26-0 with an 83-55 win against Rutgers-Newark in the NJAC semifinals.

William Paterson will face the Red Hawks for the conference title on Saturday after beating TCNJ 55-39. 

Last year Vassar won the Liberty League tournament as the No. 3 seed, the year before as the No. 4 seed. Well, this year the Brewers were the top seed in the conference tournament, and the LL upsets continued, as William Smith advanced with a 69-58 win. The Herons went on a 17-6 run in the second half to break out of a 42-42 tie.

No. 10 Catholic and Scranton will face off for a third time, this one for the Landmark Conference automatic bid. The Cardinals improved to 25-1, defeating Juniata 72-59 as Katarina Owunna posted her seventh double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 reboundsErin Boggan was the hero for Scranton, as she hit an 18-footer with five seconds left to keep her senior season alive and lift the Lady Royals past Moravian 72-71 on the road. Boggan also added 16 rebounds, while Meredith Mesaris scored 21.

No. 19 Lebanon Valley converted 25 of 34 free throw attempts and eliminated Widener from the MAC Commonwealth playoffs, 68-56. The Flying Dutchmen put four starters in double figures and the fifth had nine points. Lebanon Valley will play No. 13 Messiah in the final since the Falcons defeated Elizabethtown 58-48 behind Dori Gyori's 26 points.

St. Scholastica upset Minnesota-Morris 83-78 in overtime and knocked the UMAC favorites out of the playoffs. The Cougars were undefeated in the UMAC regular season.

Scranton's men nearly joined their women in the trip to D.C. for the Landmark Conference championship before Juniata rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final 3:43 to force overtime, then beat the Royals in the second overtime 84-74. Brian Scholly and Jeremy Hays scored 22 apiece in the win. Catholic defeated Merchant Marine 65-57 despite 3-for-10 shooting and a dismal 5-for-16 performance from the foul line by Chris Kearney.

Lycoming edged Albright in the MAC Commonwealth men's semis 80-78 behind Jerald Williams' near triple-double. Williams, who leads Division III's in assists per game, had nine points, 11 assists and 12 rebounds. Kyle Jordan had 20 points and 18 rebounds for the Lions. Lycoming will meet top-seeded Alvernia in the conference final.

Northwestern (Minn.) and Bethany Lutheran advanced to the UMAC title game. Tom Gisler scored a game-high 20 for the Eagles, who improved to 20-6. Alex Weldon scored 21 for Bethany Lutheran, which moved to 11-13 by beating North Central (Minn.).

Delaware Valley got 39 points and 20 rebounds from senior forwards duo Jeremy Beckett and Daulton Derr as the Aggies defeated Misericordia 65-49. They will meet DeSales in the MAC Freedom finals for the second time in three years. The Bulldogs held off FDU-Florham 59-57 with Michael Guldin hitting the game winning shot in the final minute.

Hobart will play RPI for the Liberty League crown. Stefan Thompson scored 23 points and Joe Gibbons added 16 for the Statesmen, who won their 12th consecutive game to improve to 20-6.

Muhlenberg defeated Gettysburg 45-43 in the lowest scoring game in Centennial Conference history. The Mules will play top-seed Franklin and Marshall in the semifinals on Friday.
