Wednesday wrap: Cards, Caps fall

DeSales knocked off No. 12 Catholic 76-66 in a Wednesday night of upsets in the Mid-Atlantic region.

DeSales trailed by one midway through the first half when Mike Coleman and Michael Guldin combined for 14 points as part of a 17-6 run that put the Bulldogs in front to stay. DeSales shot 50 percent from the floor and held Catholic to 36 percent shooting. Paul Pammer and Guldin scored 18 each for the Bulldogs (5-2). Chris Kearney had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Cardinals (5-1).

No. 24 St. Mary's (Md.) picked up a mild upset win by holding off visiting No. 15 Christopher Newport 65-60. The Seahawks built an 11-point lead and made their free throws down the stretch to improve to 6-1. Nick LaGuerre registered his fourth consecutive double-double for the Seahawks while Tra Benefield had 21 points for Christopher Newport (5-1).

Cabrini lost at home for the first time since 2009 as Immaculata upended the Cavaliers 66-60. Nelson Torres didn't start for the Mighty Macs but he scored 22 points in 35 minutes. Freshman phenom Arron Goodman picked up his sixth double-double in seven games for Cabrini.

No. 8 Franklin and Marshall edged Gettysburg 54-51 on a three-pointer by Preseason All-American Hayk Gyokchyan with 18 seconds left. The six-foot-seven forward is shooting 47 percent from behind the arc so far this season.

For the second time in a week, No. 2 UW-Whitewater won a battle of unbeaten WIAC teams. This time the Warhawks handed UW-La Crosse its first loss, 64-52. UW-Whitewater improves to 6-0, 2-0 in the WIAC with both wins on the road.

Carl Yaffe helped No. 21 NYU past SUNY-Old Westbury 80-76. Yaffe led the Violets in points (20), rebounds (12) and assists (six).

Outside the Top 25, Mike Maker won his 100th game at Williams where the Ephs rolled over NAC champion Casleton State 96-52. Maker's record is 100-23 in four-plus seasons.

Colton Hunt set a single-game scoring record again for Randolph which defeated Ferrum 78-59. Hunt scored 35 points to break his own record for the Wildcats who are in their sixth year of men's basketball. Erik Olson set an all-time assists record for UW-Stout which topped UW-Superior 69-54. Olson had six assists giving him 361 for his career.

In February 1975, Wilkes beat Scranton in the first-ever women's basketball game between the regional rivals.  Nearly 38 years later, it finally happened again as Wilkes beat No. 21 Scranton 75-67 for just the second time in 53 games.

Elena Stambone scored 34 points for Wilkes and made all 12 of her free throws, including four in the final minute. The Colonels overcame a terrific performance by Meredith Mesaris who scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Lady Royals. Full recap

St. Mary's (Minn.) hung with No. 4 St. Thomas and even led at the break 30-29. But the Tommies held the Cardinals to three field goals in the second half and surged to a 65-44 win. St. Thomas improves to 6-1, 4-0 in the MIAC while St. Mary's (Minn.) drops to 5-1, 3-1.

No. 2 Mount Union dealt John Carroll its first loss of the season. The Purple Raiders defeated the Blue Streaks 72-52 in a game with just eight free throw attempts. Montclair State cruised past Ramapo 61-40 in a matchup of unbeaten NJAC teams. Melissa Tobie scored 18 points for the Red Hawks who have won every game by double-digits.

UW-Superior couldn't maintain the momentum coming off Saturday's upset over UW-Stevens Point. UW-Stout downed the Yellowjackets 79-68 as seniors Kayla Windt and Whitney Rawdon scored 17 points in the final five minutes.
