Windt, Rawdon steal show as Stout defeats Superior for WIAC win

MENOMONIE (December 5, 2012) - It would have been a good night to call "senior night" at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Seniors Kayla Windt (Hurley) and Whitney Rawdon (Eau Claire) combined for 17 points in the final five minutes to hold off a surging UW-Superior (4-2, 1-1 WIAC) squad, and leave their home court with a 79-68 win, Wednesday night.

In the final five minutes, the Blue Devils (5-3, 1-1 WIAC) scored four points from the field and 15 from the charity stripe. Windt scored 11 of her 14 points during that stretch while Rawdon scored six of her team-high 17.

Stout jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after forcing four Yellowjacket turnovers in the first five minutes. Superior stormed back, however, and tied the game at 11-all.  Connie Urmanski, who finished with a game-high 22 points, added two free throws to give her team their first lead of the night midway through the first half.

The teams traded buckets for the next couple of minutes before Stout reeled off an 11-3 run to close the half. Ashley Deschampe (Fr, Duluth, Minn.) led the charge with five points during that run, while Haley Froehlich (So, Mondovi) added five.

Stout continued to stay hot through the break and turned their seven-point halftime lead into a 46-27 margin five minutes into the second half. Brea Boomer (Grand Portage, Minn.) scored eight of her 11 points to help spark the early second-half charge.

In the three minutes leading up to halftime and the five minutes following it, Stout outscored Superior, 25-6, to build a 19-point lead, their largest of the night.

The Yellowjackets would not go away. In fact, they quickly began erasing their deficit. Superior was scoring just as often as Stout was turning the ball over and five minutes later, Stout's lead had gone from 19 to two.

Froehlich, who ended with a career-high 12 points, put an end to Superior's 19-2 run with a three-pointer at 9:43. She added another jumper two minutes later, and a pair of free throws at the seven-minute mark, and Stout led by nine. From then on, it was the Rawdon and Windt show to hold on for the win. The two accounted for 20 of Stout's last 22 points, a combined 13-of-14 from the line and 3-of-3 from the field during that stretch.

Stout will be on the road for the rest of the calendar year. They make stops at UW-Platteville and UW-River Falls before heading to Texas for their winter break trip.
