Western Connecticut State men's basketball coach Bob Campbell will be taking a medical leave of absence after undergoing a procedure on Monday, Dec. 20.

The length of Campbell's absence will depend on recovery time and clearance from his doctors to return to the Colonials' bench.

Earlier this season, Campbell, in his 27th year at the helm, won his 500th coaching victory when WestConn defeated Plattsburgh State in the first round of the Valiant Classic at Manhattanville College on Nov. 19.

During his absence and beginning with Tuesday's home game against WPI, Eddie Quick, an assistant under Campbell and a former player back in the early 1990s, will take over the reigns. Ken Berube, also a former player of Campbell's, will continue as an assistant. First-year assistants Peter Szklarz and Mike Yoder will also continue to be on the sidelines.

Quick, a 1991 WestConn graduate, was a member of the Colonials' 28-2 squad that advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament's Elite Eight back in 1990.

He earned a master’s degree from Wesleyan and is the History Department Coordinator for the town of East Hartford.

His head coaching experience includes stints at Glastonbury High School, Hartford Public High School, and most recently at Daniel Webster.
