Donna Newberry, who led Muskingum's women's basketball team to a 403-218 mark, set the all-time Division III career softball wins record Wednesday, April 27, with an 8-3 win against Otterbein in the second game of a doubleheader.
Newberry coached both women's basketball and softball until the end of the 1999-2000 season, when she stepped down from the basketball post. Her basketball teams posted 20 winning seasons, including a trip to the 1991 Division III national championship game.
In her 31st season as head softball coach, Newberry collected her 722nd career victory, surpassing the previous mark held by June Walker, who coached Trenton State (now College of New Jersey) from 1974-95.
She has led Muskingum to 14 NCAA regional appearances, including seven in a row from 1998-2004, and five Division III World Series appearances, including a national title in 2001.
