Wartburg becomes third to beat a D-I

Patrick Morrison led all scorers with 24 points to help Wartburg to a 72-61 victory against Division I Central Florida on Dec. 18. The Knights joined Catholic and Augustana as Division III teams who have beaten Division I teams this season.

The game was tied 53-53 after Central Florida's Inyo Cue hit a layup and a free throw with 6:14 remaining. But Wartburg (7-1) responded with seven consecutive points by Morrison to pull ahead 60-53. Wartburg led by at least five points the rest of the way, shooting 10-for-22 from three-point range and 14-for-16 from the line. The Knights shot 44.4% for the game.

Jacob Olsen came off the bench to score 15 points and starters Michael Pipho and Troy Osterhaus, right, had 10 each.

Mario Lovett scored 16 points to lead Central Florida (2-6), which shot 40.4%. Wartburg outrebounded the Golden Knights 28-27 and held them to 4-for-19 from beyond the arc.
