LAS VEGAS -- The Redlands men set a new single-game D3hoops.com Classic record for points scored, and the Redlands women set a record for fewest points allowed on the second full day of action in Las Vegas.
The Bulldogs used their pressing defense, athleticism, and depth to generate transition baskets and open three-pointers in the first half, leading 57-43 at the break. The offensive attack continued in the second half as Redlands had six players score double figures, with none playing more than 24 minutes.
Cam Brown scored 17 points in 17 minutes on seven for nine shooting, and Lucas Gordon finished one rebound shy of a double-double for Redlands (8-1), which set a new Classic single-game record for points. All-American Mason Dopirak scored 24 points for MSOE (5-5), which shot 12 for 24 from three but got outscored 52-24 in the paint.
Central guard Kyle Cason continued his strong freshman campaign, and the Dutch dealt Occidental its first meaningful loss of the season, 82-69. Cason scored 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting in the first half and then was even better in the second, adding 14 more. The Dutch shot 53 percent from the field and got a double-double from Owen Schipper (18 points, 10 rebounds).
The Dutch improved to 6-5 with one more game to play at the Classic against Bridgewater State, while Occidental slipped to 6-1, excluding the exhibition loss to Division I San Diego.
Mary Hardin-Baylor used its transition game and strength around the rim to down Ohio Northern, 74-65.
The Crusaders led by as many as 15 in the second half before the Polar Bears battled back within one on Mason Studer’s three-pointer with 2:47 to play. But UMHB held ONU without a field goal the rest of the way and Zachary Engels scored six of his 16 points in the closing minutes to put the game away.
Hudson Johnson led the Cru with 21 points, 11 of them from the foul line, and Mary Hardin-Baylor outscored Ohio Northern 23-0 in transition. Will Miller lead Ohio Northern (6-6) with 19 points.
Redlands and Mary Hardin-Baylor face off on the final day of the Classic.
On the women's side, Gettysburg heads back to Central Pennsylvania with a pair of wins after defeating Occidental, 68-53. Just as they did against Amherst, the Bullets got off to a slow start and then took over with a strong second quarter. This time Gettysburg outscored the Tigers by 12 in that period and took a nine-point lead into halftime. Gettysburg pushed the lead to double digits early in the second half and led comfortably the rest of the way.
Bullets backcourt duo Kimberly Hopkins and Olivia Jones combined for 33 points on 13-for-25 shooting, and Gettysburg (7-4) outscored Occidental 40-24 in the paint. Ainsley Shelsta posted a double-double for the Tigers (4-3).
Amherst got back on the right track by stifling Salve Regina in a 61-47 wire-to-wire win. Amherst seized control in the first half with its suffocating defense, holding the Seahawks to 17 points. Salve Regina played the Mammoths even in the second half, but could not cut into the Amherst double-digit lead.
Anna Tranum filled the stat sheet with 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Sylvia Liddle and Chase Anderson each had double-doubles for Amherst (7-1), which heads west to play Whittier in California. Sofia Neary tallied 18 points and 13 rebounds for Salve Regina (4-6), which will play Occidental on Tuesday.
In the first game of the day, Redlands shut down Wesleyan (Conn.) and cruised past the Cardinals, 64-31. The Bulldogs held Wesleyan to nine made field goals against 15 turnovers and got 13-point, 10-rebound performances from AJ Wick and Leila Hosn. Redlands (6-1) also took care of the ball, tallying 16 assists to eight turnovers. The 31-point total was the lowest allowed ever at the D3hoops.com Classic.
